How to Score Better in CUET English

This is the study layer before the mocks: first build concept buckets, then practise small examples, then attack full sets with a mistake log. The goal is not only score practice, but better recall under pressure.

Master First

  • Reading comprehension: main idea, inference, tone, vocabulary in context, and author's purpose.
  • Grammar: agreement, tense, modifiers, articles, prepositions, voice, narration, and sentence correction.
  • Vocabulary and verbal ability through usage, not word lists alone.

Worked Micro-Drills

  • Tone questions need emotional direction: critical, neutral, optimistic, ironic, or analytical.
  • Inference must be supported by the passage, not by outside knowledge.
  • Grammar questions usually fail at subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, or misplaced modifiers.

Avoid These Traps

  • Do not answer RC from memory or opinion; stay inside the passage.
  • A synonym can be correct generally but wrong in sentence context.
  • Extreme options are often wrong unless the passage clearly supports them.

7-Day Revision Loop

  1. Day 1: revise formulas, definitions, people, events, or terms.
  2. Day 2: solve one easy set without timer and mark weak concepts.
  3. Day 3: revise only wrong-answer topics and make a one-page sheet.
  4. Day 4: solve one timed set and track negative marking.
  5. Day 5: redo only mistakes without seeing solutions first.
  6. Day 6: take another mock and compare accuracy chapter-wise.
  7. Day 7: revise the mistake log, not the whole book again.

Mistake Log Format

Question type: direct, case, assertion, passage, match, or data.
Wrong because: concept gap, reading error, formula error, confusion pair, or time pressure.
Fix: one rule you will check before attempting similar questions.

About CUET UG English

English is the most widely attempted language test in CUET UG Section IA, taken by students from all streams — science, commerce, and humanities — as it is the medium of instruction at most Central Universities. The paper has 50 questions (attempt any 40) with +5/−1 marking.

The CUET English syllabus covers five areas: Reading Comprehension — factual, literary, and narrative unseen passages (200–400 words, 20–25 questions per set); Grammar — Tenses (all forms), Active and Passive Voice, Direct and Indirect Narration, Articles, Prepositions, Subject-Verb Agreement; Vocabulary — Synonyms, Antonyms, Idioms and Phrases, One-Word Substitution, Fill in the Blanks; Verbal Ability — Sentence Completion, Para-Jumbles, Odd Sentence Out; and Applied Grammar — Error Correction, Sentence Improvement.

How to Use the CUET English Mock Pack

  1. Attempt Set 1 cold (without preparation) to baseline your current Reading Comprehension speed and grammar accuracy.
  2. For each set, read comprehension passages completely before answering — don't skim.
  3. After submission, note down every grammar and vocabulary question you got wrong and categorise by type (tense, voice, synonyms, etc.).
  4. Revise the specific grammar rule for each error type before the next set.
  5. Track your RC accuracy and target at least 80% accuracy on comprehension before exam day.

CUET English Mock Pack — FAQs

How many mock sets are in the CUET English Mock Pack?

The pack includes 8 full-length CUET-style English sets, each with 50 questions. Candidates should attempt any 40, matching the actual CUET English paper format.

How much of CUET English is Reading Comprehension?

Reading Comprehension is the largest section in CUET English, typically accounting for 20–25 out of 50 questions per set. Passages are 200–400 words with factual, inferential, vocabulary-in-context, and tone-based questions.

What grammar topics are most important for CUET English?

The highest-frequency grammar topics are Tenses (especially Perfect and Perfect Continuous), Active-Passive Voice (all tenses), Direct-Indirect Narration, Articles (a, an, the), and Prepositions. Error Correction questions test these areas most heavily.

Does CUET English test literature or just language skills?

CUET English Section IA (Language Test) tests language skills — reading comprehension, grammar, and vocabulary — not specific literary texts. However, some passages may be literary excerpts, testing comprehension and language inference rather than knowledge of a specific book.
