Quick Q&A Before You Revise
Must the mean be one of the observations?
No. For example, the mean of 2 and 3 is 2.5. A mean is a summary calculated from all the values.
Is the median always better than the mean?
No. They answer different questions. The median resists extreme values, while the mean accounts for the total of all numerical observations. Choose according to the context.
Can categorical data have a mean?
A numerical mean is not meaningful for labels such as favourite colours. A mode can identify the most frequent category.
