Quick Q&A Before You Revise

Why are some patients of diabetes treated by giving injections of insulin?

In these patients the pancreas does not make enough insulin, so blood glucose stays high. Insulin cannot be taken as a tablet because it is a protein and would be digested in the stomach, so it is injected.

How does chemical coordination take place in plants?

Plants have no nerves. When a stimulus acts, plant cells make hormones (such as auxin, gibberellin, cytokinin, abscisic acid). These diffuse to nearby cells and change their rate of growth or their water content, producing the response.

What is the need for a system of control and coordination in an organism?

The different organs of the body must work together in a controlled way in response to changes inside and outside the body. Control and coordination systems make sure the responses are appropriate, timed correctly, and directed to the right organ.

How are involuntary actions different from reflex actions?

Involuntary actions (heartbeat, peristalsis) are controlled by the mid- and hind-brain and go on continuously. Reflex actions are sudden responses to a specific stimulus, routed through the spinal cord as a reflex arc.
