Quick Q&A Before You Revise

Why do we need to manage our resources carefully?

Resources are limited, the human population and its demands are increasing, and many resources (like fossil fuels) cannot be renewed. Careful management makes resources last longer, keeps their distribution fair, and reduces harm to the environment.

Why should we conserve forests and wildlife?

Forests hold most of our biodiversity, and losing a species or a habitat is irreversible. Forests also regulate climate and the water cycle, prevent soil erosion, and support the livelihoods of millions of people.

It is often said that the destruction of forests affects rainfall. Explain.

Trees release large amounts of water vapour by transpiration, which contributes to cloud formation and rainfall in and around the forest. Removing the forest reduces this moisture supply, so the region tends to become drier.

How can you as an individual contribute to the management of natural resources?

Save electricity and water, avoid single-use plastic, segregate and recycle waste, use public transport, plant and care for trees, and spread awareness among family and friends.
